Chapter 39
Kevin swung his legs back down to
the floor. He threw a pen and pad onto the dining
room table. “Enjoy yourself and leave me alone,”
he barked at her.
Bron mumbled at him and he glanced
at her trying to figure out what she said. Bron got
up, refilled her coffee, and went and sat back down.
She closed her eyes and tried to think. Eventually
she just would open them and stare blankly at the
tablet in front of her. Nothing could come to her.
Kevin was watching her. He was doing
paperwork, but it had to do with her. The last thing
he wanted was her anywhere near the desk. It was
his notes from Saturday. He began to laugh out loud.
Bron looked at him, “Something funny?”
“Writer’s block?” he asked.
“Hmmpf,” she huffed out.
“That was my intention originally,
if you remember,” he chuckled.
The words that he spoke to her that
night in Toronto came back to her. “I just wanted
to make it harder for you to separate fact from fiction.”
“You jackass!” she yelled at him.
“Whoa and good morning too you to
Sparky,” Mc smiled, as he walked in the door, tossing
his brief case on the couch.
“Go to hell and you better be here
to take me back home with my kid,” she looked angrily
at him.
“Sparky, now come on, you know that
isn’t up to me.” Mc was enjoying this as he smiled
at her. “Because you don’t be…”
“Don’t even say it, so help me God,
I’ll hurt you,” she spat at him.
Mc closed his mouth and shrugged
his shoulders. He flashed a wide-eyed grin to Kevin
who returned it. Walking over to his brief case he
opened it and grabbed an envelope out of it. Mc strolled
over to Kevin at the desk and dropped it in front
of him.
Bron’s eyebrows wrinkled together.
What is that she wondered? Bron knew Kevin wouldn’t
answer her if she asked him.
“What did you just give him?” she
questioned Mc with anger already in her eyes.
“Nothing,” he grinned wickedly at
her, knowing it would just anger her more.
Bron watched Kevin open the envelope
and start to read. He flipped through all the pages
and read each one.
“I know damn well, whatever you gave
him has to do with me. What is it?” she said as she
stood up and started for the desk.
“Sit down,” Mc yelled at her. “It’s
business Bron that’s all.”
Kevin watched Bron quietly return
to her seat. Quickly he signed the top sheet, placed
the papers back in the envelope, and handed it back
to Mc. He could see a war was going to break out
between the two. Thinking to himself, Bron moved
pretty quickly and recalled his conversation with
Stevie about the relationship between Mc and Bron.
He knew that sometimes it had gotten nasty and Bron
was on the receiving end of it.
Mc grabbed the envelope, ambled over
to his brief case, tossed it in and slammed it shut.
“Well as long as the three of us
are together, we can get some things straightened
out.” Kevin announced.
Bron frowned at him, “There’s nothing
to straighten out, I’m getting Bounce and I’m going
home.”
“No you’re not,” Mc exclaimed loudly.
“She’s staying with Stevie so let’s
drop it.” Kevin stated matter-of-factly.
Mc turned to Kevin, “So what are
you going to do now?”
“I don’t know? I’ll think of something,”
he beamed at Mc.
“Excuse me, I’m sitting right here.
Don’t I have a say in this,” she spoke in rage.
“NO,” they both chimed. Kevin looked
at her and smirked, “Maybe after you grow up.”
“Asshole, I’m out of here,” she yelled
as she leaped up and headed for the door.
“Touch that door and I’ll beat the
hell out of you,” Mc shouted at her back.
Kevin issued Mc a warning, “Mc!”
Kevin watched Bron freeze in her tracks and shudder.
Well that confirms my reservations about this relationship
he thought. “Bron, please come back so we can finish
this,” Kevin asked her.
Bron went and grabbed her cup and
walked to the kitchen to fill it. She went to pour
a cup and the coffee was gone. Water was better right
now; if I have one more cup, I’m going to explode.
She filled a glass and returned to the chair to sit
down.
“Now if you two are done, I want
my kid and I want to go home, to my home, today!”
she raised her chin in the air. She was tired of
being afraid.
Mc lost his control seeing the defiance
in her face. “You are such a stubborn woman, you
will never change,” he screamed as he grabbed for
her. Bron cried, “Don’t,” as she threw her arms up
to protect herself.
Kevin jumped from behind the desk.
As he grabbed Mc’s arm with one hand and pushed Bron
out of the way with the other. “Don’t you dare.
Those days are over. You’ll never lay another hand
on her again,” Kevin growled at him. Mc backed off
surprised and shocked at Kevin’s response.
Kevin looked over to Bron apologetically,
“I’m sorry.”
Mc looked at her, “I’m sorry Bron.
I’m just upset over this Lenny thing and the fact
that you didn’t tell me.”
Bron looked at both of them. She
decided she was going to just ignore this. They weren’t
going to get her to discuss this with them. It was
private and personal.
Mc knew that bringing Lenny up was
a bad idea the minute he saw the look of horror on
Bron’s face.
Kevin leaned down and whispered to
her, “Relax, I won’t let him hurt you.” Bron looked
at him and he saw the relief wash over her face.
“Why don’t you write, it might make you feel better,”
he said as he winked at her and strode back over to
the desk.
Bron scowled at Kevin and picked
up her pen.
Kevin and Mc started discussing everyday
things to put Bron at ease and break the tension in
the room.
After fifteen minutes of them talking,
Mc grinned at Kevin and nodded towards Bron.
Bron was lost in her thoughts, in
her own little world, forgetting they were even there.
She had an idea but couldn’t work it out in her head
in order to get it on paper. I wish I had my laptop
I need to do some research before I go forward with
this plot.
Bron’s thoughts were interrupted
by Mc pulling the tablet away from her and breaking
her concentration. “Bron what’s this?” He lifted
the blank tablet in the air.
Bron scrunched up her face at him
and didn’t say a word.
“What’s the matter Sparky? I don’t
know you look frustrated.” Mc giggled.
Kevin started laughing wildly. The
anger came in flash through her body and Mc saw it.
“That’s it, I hate both of you!”
she screamed at the top of her lungs and stormed for
the door.
“Don’t go off the floor,” she heard
Kevin say in between his fits of laughter.
Mc watched Bron fly out the door
and turned to look at Kevin. “Something I said?”
he asked him, shocked by the rage in Bron over something
so small.
Kevin was still laughing as he tried
to pull himself together, “No, something I did.”
Mc looked at him, his eyebrows furrowed
together, “Huh?”
“Bron got a taste of her favorite
trick last night and she didn’t like it,” Kevin chuckled.
Mc’s face went from confused to total
shock. “You didn’t?” he asked astounded and continued.
“You teased her ass and left her hanging,” he laughed
uncontrollably.
“Yes I did,” Kevin chuckled.
“Oh man Kev, that’s mean knowing
how she feels about you.” Mc shook his head.
“I know, you know, and everyone else
knows how Bron feels about me. It’s about time she
grew up and admitted it,” Kevin laughed. “I told
her if she wanted me she had to ask,” he giggled.
Mc looked at him and shook his head
again, “I never thought in a million years you had
it in you.”
Kevin sobered up quickly. “Neither
did I, but you taught her how to do it,” he said stone-faced.
“Yeah, I know. I don’t want to talk
about it now,” Mc answered him. They quickly got
off the subject not ready to go there yet. They had
formed an alliance for now over Bron.
Kevin looked at Mc, “I wasn’t kidding
when I told you never to lay a hand on her again.”
Mc sized Kevin up and figured that
Kevin was serious about this. It wasn’t that Mc was
afraid of the younger man, but for some unknown reason,
he didn’t want to lose his respect. “If that’s what
you want,” he answered him. Mc mused in his head.
Will see how long it takes Bron to push you to your
breaking point Kevin. She is very good at it.
